Ronald Leroy Olson was born in Minnesota on December 8, 1895. Upon his retun from service in World War II he attended the Univeristy of Washington, where he received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in anthropology. His area of interest, at the time, was the American Indian tribes of the northwest coast. He continued his graduate education at the University of California, Berkeley in 1927 and obtained his PhD in archaeology in 1929. He then worked two years at the American Museum of Natural History, spending much of that time as an archaeologist in Peru. In 1931 he returned to UC Berkeley's Department of Anthropology where he taught until his retirement in 1956. Olson died in 1979.
